Michael Chan, General Manager, Polytrade Paper Corporation Limited.
Challenge:

Following Polytrade Paper’s introduction of several premium low carbon paper to the Hong Kong market and establishing their corporate carbon footprint in 2010, Polytrade decided to become carbon neutral in compliant with the most robust international carbon neutrality standard PAS 2060, to demonstrate the company’s further commitment to tackling climate change.
Solution
Under the rigorous requirements of the PAS 2060 standard, any company claiming carbon neutrality must commit to and make clear declaration of targeted carbon reductions, before resorting to carbon credits to offset remaining carbon emissions.
RESET Carbon helped Polytrade to, first, establish a 3-year greenhouse gas inventory of the company, with the 2010-2011 footprint covering all relevant emissions from Scope 1, 2 and 3 (including indirect sources likes staff commuting, flights and paper use), as required by PAS 2060 standard.
We then carried out in-depth energy and carbon assessment of Polytrade’s local office and warehouses to establish a practical carbon and energy use reduction plan and a proposed reduction target for the company. Working closely with the Polytrade team, a carbon management system was set up and the execution roadmap of reduction measures identified. Polytrade’s first year of carbon neutrality was achieved through the purchase of premium GOLD STANDARD® VER credits (from a wind farm project in Taiwan), offsetting the company’s emissions for 2010.
The corporate carbon footprint, established carbon management system and neutrality claims made were then verified and validated by BSI, an independent verifier between 23-25th February 2011, making Polytrade the first paper merchant in Asia to achieve carbon neutrality compliant with the PAS 2060 standard. On 1st February 2011 Polytrade announced the commitment to a 5% carbon intensity reduction target (per full time employee) from 2010 levels by end of 2013.
