Challenge:

RESET Carbon and RESET Energy supports Walmart to implement their aggressive 20 million ton supply chain carbon reduction target.

Walmart announced in February 2010 that they would eliminate 20 million metric tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from its global supply chain by the end of 2015. The company has identified the Chinese dyeing sector as offering a significant opportunity for achieving large-scale carbon emissions reductions whilst reducing supplier energy costs.

Solution

RESET Carbon and sister company, RESET Energy, provided on-the-ground energy assessments to selected Chinese dye mills in China as part of the programme. Our assessments focused on identifying energy and water efficiency opportunities and carbon savings with aggressive paybacks across a wide range of energy systems and processes. Key areas of opportunity included thermal insulation, improved controls, heat recovery, variable speed drive retrofits and in some cases optimization of on-site powerplant performance. Our on-site briefing to facilities managers also improved their knowledge on energy and carbon management requirements and reporting.

The carbon reduction potential is confirmed as significant with a large mill capable of reducing emissions well in excess 20 000 tonnes CO₂ per year with commercially highly attractive paybacks.

RESET continues to work with Walmart and its suppliers to support the implementation of emissions reductions measures and expand the programme to new locations.
